ABOUT ME
My name is Sarah Rath and I have been an artist and designer for a large portion of my life. I have been a problem solver from a young age, driven by my inquisitive nature. I find inspiration in using design as a means to answer questions and address the problems that I encounter.
As an interaction designer, I carry the responsibility to make functional design. Functional design meaning design that is created alongside real people and meant to be utilized by real people. To me, functional design also feels effortless to those who interact with it. It is a natural sense of understanding between the user and content. This philosophy is the foundation for all of my work.
I participate in design events like the RGD’s Design Thinkers conference to stay up to date on how cutting edge this field truly is. Here I am able to connect with others who are equally as passionate as me, and learn from those who helped make our industry as amazing as it is.
At RGD Design Thinkers 2023, I was able to meet Stefan Sagmeister, one of my graphic design idols since my early discovery of design. Along with attending a small-table talk with him and other book publishers, speakers like Eleni Beveratou and Catalina Estrada proved why I feel so strongly about making positive change. With my adaptable and diverse skillset, I bring a new perspective to any team.
As for my experience, I have an incredible collection of design and art expertise gathered from both the United States and Canada.
Prior to entering my post-secondary college degree, I attended two separate pre-college programs during my high school years. In 2018, I earned a mastery of graphic design, figure drawing and painting at Monserrat College of Art. I also attended Maine College of Art and Design in 2019, here was where I was introduced to printmaking and sparked my love for typography.
After graduating high school, I entered into Sheridan College’s Art Fundamentals program, where I further was able to exemplify my broad skillset to my professors, mentors, and peers. At the end of year show, I was nominated for all five awards including 2D design, 3D design, drawing, drawing systems, and painting. On top of this, I was awarded 1st place for drawing systems and 2nd place for 2D design.
Along with these academic achievement awards, two of my pieces from my 2D design course were selected to be exhibited in Sheridan College’s Remote: Art from the Pandemic exhibition. The selected pieces included a scientific drawing of a Double-crested cormorant, and an abstract alphabet with plated food.
As I’m currently in my third year of Sheridan College’s Honours Bachelor of Interaction design degree, I continue to develop and perfect my craft in visual design, visual communication, design theory and methodologies, 2D and 3D design, physical computing, augmented reality, narrative storytelling, programing and coding, and business practices and entrepreneurship.
My foundational education, experiences, and nuanced perspectives continue to be pivotal aspects influencing my present projects. These facets are instrumental in shaping my contributions to the ever-changing landscape of the design industry.
